  • Sensation is the experience of the stimulus caused by the senses.
  • Any kind of external stimulus affects the human senses so that its endocrine fibers are stimulated and the message reaches a certain part of the brain which is called sensation.
  • Sensation is a change in the conscious state that occurs when the stimulation of nerves reaches the sensory center in the brain.
  • Classes: There are three main classes of sensation.
(1) External Sensors: Changes in various stimuli in the external environment such as light, sound, heat, cold, touch-pressure and various chemicals etc. stimulate the senses which result in different sensations.
  • For example, in the rain, a drop of water falls on the skin and you feel cold.
(2) Body sensors: The composition of the various internal organs of the body produces different sensations.
  • E.g. Cell-cone cells for visual sensation, muscles of Krishna Mandal as well as microscopic cells for auditory sensation etc.
(3) Internal Sensors: Sensation is experienced due to changes in the internal organs of the body.
  • E.g. Stomach emptying makes you feel hungry, sore throat makes you feel thirsty etc.
  • But there is a difference in the perception of the individual.
  • Special training or experience of the senses can strengthen the senses.
